The following topics are suitable for one talk or a series.
_____________________________________________
1. "Connecting Like Jesus" or "Living into the likeness of Jesus" (based on 2010 book
co-authored with Tony Campolo): communication and spiritual practices for
relational transformation. Topics include: moving from self to God-awareness,
soul-care, overcoming fear, sacred listening, connecting with questions, redeeming
conflict, and storytelling.
2. "The God of Intimacy and Action" (based on 2007 book co-authored with Tony
Campolo): on having the kind of intimacy with God that fuels us to evangelize and
work for justice.
Possible description: Jesus taught the importance of cultivating our relationship with
God, doing justice, and evangelizing. Yet, many of his followers today focus only
on part of these teachings. We will look at why and how Jesus encouraged and
equipped his followers to have the kind of faith that led to a commitment to all
three. We will explore how we, no matter our age or personality, can be intimately
connected to God in ways that will fuel us to “go and make disciples” (Matthew
28:19) and “do justice” (Micah 6:8) as part of our daily lives.
3. “Three prayers that can change you and change the world”
• From Self-Awareness to God Awareness: The Prayer of Examen
• Becoming God’s Friend: Lectio Divina
• Deepening Our Intimacy with God: Centering Prayer.
4. “From quiet to community to the world” (based on Luke 6).
5. "The 'whys and hows' of spiritual disciplines or 'holy habits.'"
6. “Moving from fear to freedom.”
7. “Dealing with difficult people through different kinds of praying.”
8. "Spiritual formation and justice"
9. "Managing work and family" (For several years Mary co-taught a class on this
subject with her husband, Terry, in Spring Arbor University’s Master’s in Business
Administration program).
10. “Embracing uncertainty” (Deals with what we can learn from Peter’s on-going
challenges to follow Jesus in new ways).
11. "Spiritual Direction" (What it is and how we can incorporate its principles and
practices into our everyday relationships.)
12. "Spirituality and communication" (How our relationship with God informs and
impacts our speaking, whether one-on-one, in small groups, or in public speaking.)
